Tree work in Wyoming

A heritage garden on the Pacific Highway

Wyoming Cottage has been on the State Heritage Register since 2 April 1999. Its listing describes a corner site on the Pacific Highway enhanced by mature trees, among them two magnificent mature bunya pines, a hoop pine, a Norfolk Island pine, a jacaranda and a Moreton Bay fig. Pruning or removing trees on a listed item needs approval under the Heritage Act unless one of the standard exemptions covers the work, and the council's own tree exemptions do not apply to a heritage item.

Gosford City Council's significant tree register listed swamp mahogany at Maidens Brush Oval as remnants of bushland and winter food for birds. Swamp mahogany is a big winter-flowering eucalypt of damp ground, so pruning anywhere near trees like these starts with a look for nesting birds and hollows.

How it works

From the first message to a written quote

The council question is settled before any price, and nothing is booked until you have said yes to a quote in writing.

  1. 1

Tell us what the tree is doing

Where it stands, what it is close to and what you would like done about it.

A grey haired man in his back yard on the phone, looking up at a tall gum beside the house
  2. 2

A contractor comes to see it

A tree contractor who covers your suburb looks at the tree, the access and what is underneath it.

A steep driveway up to a hillside house with a large Sydney red gum and sandstone boulders beside it
  3. 3

    The council question is answered

Height, trunk size, distance from the house and the species decide whether a permit or an exemption applies.

A woman at a dining table working on a laptop, tall gum trees through the window behind her
  4. 4

    You get it in writing

Scope, timber, stump and date on one page, and nothing is booked until you have said yes.

A tree contractor in hi-vis work clothes walking up to a front gate, where the home owner holds a single sheet of paper, a big gum across the road

Wyoming questions

The old oak, the fire record and the 10/50 rule

Does the old English oak need a heritage check?

It does. The old Gosford council's register of significant trees listed a privately owned English oak beside the highway as part of a historical garden in conjunction with the Hely Homestead, so work on it is checked against the heritage listing before anything is priced.

Has the bush here burnt before?

Yes. NPWS fire history records a wildfire named Wyoming, covering about 9.2 hectares. Where a block backs onto bush, tree work is planned around reducing fuel near the house, once the bush fire prone land map has been checked for the parcel.

Can a tree near the house come down under the 10/50 rule?

Where the RFS online tool shows the parcel in a 10/50 entitlement area on the day, trees within 10 metres of a home can be cleared. Under that code vegetation must not be removed below the soil surface, so the stump stays in the ground and grinding it out is a separate question.
