Tree work in Berkeley Vale

Storms that hit hardest here

After severe overnight storms in January 2016, streets in Berkeley Vale were littered with fallen trees, cutting off roads and driveways. Two years later, when the Central Coast was caught in a storm cell in January 2018, Berkeley Vale was the worst hit region, with a trampoline flipped onto one roof. Once a storm passes, fallen timber is cleared first so people can get in and out, then the split or uprooted trees still standing near houses are checked.

The reserve between Wyong Road and Lorraine Avenue, behind the retirement village, is a narrow remnant of blue gum and turpentine forest that includes the threatened paperbark Melaleuca biconvexa. Blue gums and turpentines grow tall and heavy, so one leaning over a yard beside the reserve usually comes down in sections on ropes. A paperbark nearby is identified before anything is cut, because council's exemptions do not cover a threatened species.

Berkeley Vale questions

Storm season, the lake and the bush edge

Is it worth having trees checked before storm season?

In Berkeley Vale, yes. In October 2017 NRMA data ranked the Central Coast in the top ten most storm affected areas, with Berkeley Vale the hardest hit locally. Taking out deadwood, cutting limbs back off roofs and thinning heavy canopies before the season are the jobs most likely to prevent damage.

Can the lake flood yards in Lake Edge?

It can. In July 2022, with Tuggerah Lake at Long Jetty expected to reach near 1.1m, a council update warned that inundation of properties in Lake Edge, Berkeley Vale was possible. Floodwater softens the ground around root plates and keeps trucks, chippers and stump grinders off lawns until it dries, so jobs there are timed around the lake level.

Has the bushland edge ever burnt?

Yes. NPWS fire history records a wildfire named Berkeley Rd that started on 4 November 1993 and burnt about 126 hectares. On blocks along the bush, gutters are kept clear of leaf litter, and where the RFS online tool confirms a 10/50 entitlement on the day, trees within 10 metres of a home can be cleared under it.
