Tree work in Macmasters Beach
Swells, sandbags and pines on the dune
In June 2016 the council placed bags of stabilised sand in front of the surf club as an emergency response to erosion after large ocean swell and tides, and it says that structure has since deteriorated. Its draft coastal management program for the open coast includes an action to complete a coastal risk and options assessment for Marine Parade. A big sea can strip sand from under a beachfront tree's roots, so after a swell a new lean or bared roots are looked at before anyone climbs or cuts.
After a council resolution in July 2025, an appropriately qualified arborist assessed the Norfolk Island pines along the foreshore, and the council reports they were not identified as a risk. The coastal engineers' design for the surf club works keeps those pines undisturbed and avoids any digging into the slope of the dune due to Aboriginal heritage.

Macmasters Beach questions
A painted red gum and the burns behind the houses
Can the red gum the artists painted be pruned?
Lightly, once the council's rules have been checked. A privately owned Sydney red gum in Macmasters Beach was listed on Gosford City Council's significant tree register at grading 1 as a landmark painted by several artists. On a tree like that the cuts are kept small and heavy limbs are lowered on ropes rather than dropped.
Has the bush behind the houses been burnt?
Yes, on purpose. The parks service's fire history records two prescribed burns named for Bombi Road. On the blocks along that edge the usual work is dead wood, branches over the roof and gutters full of leaves, once the RFS 10/50 tool has been checked for the lot.
