Tree work in Kariong

A plateau on the national park edge

Kariong sits beside Brisbane Water National Park, and in March 2024 the parks service ran a hazard reduction burn to protect homes in Kariong. A site beside the park is mapped as Vegetation Category 1 and Vegetation Buffer on the bushfire prone land map.

The ground is sandstone. Mount Penang sits on a broad ridgetop plateau whose eastern side curves away in steep rock benches downslope, so stumps up here often sit on rock and a machine cannot get everywhere.

Mount Penang Parklands has boundary plantings of mature pines, poplars, coral trees and brush box, and remnant stands of ancient scribbly gums among an almost intact sandstone plant community.

Kariong questions

Mount Penang's heritage plantings

Can the old plantings at Mount Penang be cut back?

Not as an ordinary job. The council's planning scheme lists mature cultural plantings at Kariong, among them coral trees, brush box, camphor laurels, white poplars, hoop pines, an oak and a larch, as a local heritage item, and the council's tree exemptions do not apply to heritage items, even for species on its undesirable list.

Which trees line the parklands entrance?

The Avenue, now the main entry drive into Mount Penang Parklands, was planted with a row of brush box trees on each side, and the road and its trees were in place by 1938.

Is the whole Mount Penang area protected?

Yes. Kariong contains the Mount Penang Parklands Heritage Conservation Area, of State significance in the planning scheme, and altering a tree inside a heritage conservation area needs development consent, subject to the plan's exceptions.
