Tree work in San Remo

A week of fires, and a fragile foreshore

NPWS fire history lists fires named San Remo on 6, 7 and 9 January 2009, and another named San Remo Walkway on 10 January. The largest, a wildfire that started on 7 January, burnt about 12.9 hectares. For homes near that bush, the usual tree work is clearing dead wood, raising the canopy off the roof and keeping leaf litter and fallen branches away from the walls.

On the lake side of the suburb, council planned a rehabilitation project focusing on managing foreshore erosion, including reshaping the shoreline to decrease the impact of wave energy. A bank that is wearing away can expose and undercut the roots of the trees growing on it, so a new lean or a lifting root plate is worth having looked at.

San Remo questions

The saltmarsh and the bushfire rule

What about trees beside the saltmarsh?

They are worked around it. The San Remo saltmarsh rehabilitation aims to restore coastal saltmarsh, an endangered ecological community, so branches, logs, chip and machinery from a tree job stay off it, and nothing is dragged across the marsh or stacked on it.

Can the 10/50 bushfire rule be used near the lake?

Not close to the water. The RFS code does not allow coastal saltmarsh to be cleared, or anything within 10 metres of a lake, so for a tree near the San Remo saltmarsh rehabilitation, the distance to the water is measured before 10/50 is relied on.
