Ridges that are burnt to protect the houses

Council and the Rural Fire Service rebuilt the Jilliby South Fire Trail, expanded the asset protection zone and finished the work with hazard reduction burning in the bushland. That was done by May 2017, and it shows the homes on that edge sit beside fuel that has to be burnt to protect them.

The parks service mapped a prescribed burn named Whitemans Ridge HR on 8 March 2025, in several parts, the largest about 192 hectares. Burns on that scale show how much fuel the ridges around Jilliby carry, which is why anything dead near the house comes out, and the cleared zone around the buildings is kept tidy, before summer.

Jilliby questions

Creek floods and where the green waste goes

Does Jilliby Creek flood?

It reaches minor flood level in heavy rain. In September 2019, days after a downpour, NBN News reported that Jilliby Creek at Jilliby had dipped below the minor flooding level. Flats beside the creek can stay soaked for days after that, which loosens the root hold of trees on the banks, and heavy gear stays off the soft ground until it drains.

Where can the branches and logs go?

Not far. Council accepts green waste, for a fee, at the Buttonderry Waste Management Facility on Hue Hue Road, one of the two council facilities that take it and inside Jilliby itself, so a load too big for a kerbside pickup has a short haul rather than a trip across the coast.
