Tree work in Tacoma South
Wet ground on the southern bank
Council has warned that water will periodically get into any sewerage system on the southern bank of the Wyong River in Tacoma South, due to the high water table and close proximity to the river. A tree growing in ground that wet keeps its roots near the surface, and a shallow root plate gives a tall tree less to hold on with when a strong wind comes through.
Council's streambank rehabilitation project on a section of the Wyong River here used soft engineering and native planting to protect the bank from further erosion, which can harm water quality and lead to tree-fall into the river. A tree being undercut from the water side should be dealt with before its roots let go, and a removal on the bank is worked from the land side so the new planting is left alone.

Tacoma South questions
Cut off by floods, and a burn in the bush
What happens to tree work when the river floods?
It waits for the water to drop. On 7 May 2024 the NSW SES issued a Watch and Act warning for Tacoma South flooding, prepare to isolate, telling residents to get ready to be cut off by floodwater. A tree that falls in weather like that is made safe once access returns, and the ones left standing in waterlogged ground are checked for roots lifting.
Is the bush behind the houses ever burnt to reduce fuel?
It is. The parks service's fire history records a prescribed burn named Horse Track HR within Tacoma South. It covered about 40 hectares in November 2021, and on a block backing onto that country the useful work is keeping limbs clear of the roof, raking out leaf litter and taking down dead or leaning trees near the house.
