Tree work in Dooralong

Timber getters, orchards and a fire off the ridge

The Dooralong valley was logged before it was planted with orchards. A school inspector, quoted in the heritage listing for Dooralong Public School, noted in 1913 that orchard settlement is going on and is replacing the timber industry, and several of the parents who applied for the school were timber getters. So a property here may hold regrowth bush alongside old fruit or farm trees. An old fruit tree is often small enough to prune or take out from the ground, while a tall regrowth tree beside a shed may have to be climbed and lowered in pieces.

Fire has come down off these ridges before. The same listing records that on 13 December 1938 the teacher sent the children home after he and the boys spent the morning raking around the fences, to make the grounds safe to burn back to a serious fire racing down the ridge towards the school. On a block below a ridge, most of the useful work is on the uphill side: dead trees and dropped limbs cleared, and branches kept back from the house and sheds.

Dooralong questions

A school saved from fire, and tanks on reserve land

Has fire reached buildings in Dooralong before?

It has. The school's heritage record quotes the teacher reporting in November 1915 that the school ground had been swept by a destructive bush-fire, which threatened the outbuildings and fences until he and other men saved them. On a Dooralong block today the same kinds of structure need protecting, so limbs are kept off the roof and clear space is left around sheds and fences.

Is there town water for fighting a fire in Dooralong?

No. In a December 2017 release on firefighting water, council said its newest tanks at Dooralong were located on Dooralong Reserve Trust land, part of a program for high risk places with no town water, where refilling a fire truck can take a long time. A fire here is harder to fight than one in town, so the clearing is done well before summer, not when smoke is already on the ridge.
