Tree work in Peats Ridge
Fire on a ridge road, and a school in the bush
The parks service has mapped a wildfire named Barakee Rd, which takes its name from one of the ridge's own roads. It started at the end of August 1991 and burnt about 75 hectares, which shows how close the bush runs to the houses on the ridge. Before each fire season the useful jobs are limbs cut back from the roof line, gutters cleared, and dead or leaning trees near the house and sheds felled before they become fuel.
The heritage listing for Peats Ridge Public School describes several predominantly timber buildings set amongst natural bushland, with a citrus orchard adjacent. A job on a block like that can mean tall natives over timber walls and fruit trees beside them, each needing different gear and a different hand.

Peats Ridge questions
Memorial plantings at the hall, and a week-long burn
Are there memorial trees at the club rooms?
There are. The club rooms' heritage listing records that trees were planted in memory of early pioneers associated with the clubroom, and that the Peats Ridge CWA also planted trees to honour long serving members. Because the hall is a listed heritage item, work near those trees is planned with council's heritage rules in mind and with the people who look after the hall.
Are planned burns carried out near Peats Ridge?
They are. NPWS mapping shows a prescribed burn named Upper Popran Creek, which ran for a week in August 2014 and covered about 128 hectares. Burns of that size show how much fuel builds up in the bush around the ridge.
