Tree work in The Entrance North
A beachfront dune that keeps moving
In a notice on 2 April 2025, council said large swells had caused significant coastal erosion at the southern end of The Entrance North, with landslips at some private beachfront properties and steep sand escarpments. Where the sand under a block has slumped, roots on the dune crest are undercut, so a tree there is checked for lean and bared roots before anyone climbs it.
The dune has moved before. In July 2020 council's emergency works at North Entrance installed 200 tonnes in the priority area, focused on stabilising the base of the escarpment. A tree on a beachfront block here is judged on the dune face beneath it as well as on its own trunk and crown, and heavy machinery is kept off the dune crest.

The Entrance North questions
Heritage trees on the reserve, and the closed beach
Are any trees here heritage listed?
Yes, a group of trees on a Crown reserve in Hutton Road is a local heritage item in the planning scheme. As part of a heritage item they sit outside the council's tree exemptions, and jobs on the neighbouring blocks keep trucks, drop zones and root damage away from them.
Is the beach below the houses safe to work from?
Not after a big sea. In April 2022 council warned people off the beach south of the surf club, after dangerous surf, strong winds and high tides left escarpments which can drop up to 6m. Nothing from a tree job goes over the escarpment onto the sand, whether machinery, a drop zone or debris.
