The gums that keep McKillop Drive rural

Gosford City Council's significant tree register, under its South Kincumber heading, listed Sydney red gum, red bloodwood, blackbutt and grey gum along the entire roadside of McKillop Drive. Its entry for the blackbutts, on council road reserve, noted that the ambience of such areas is essential to the retention of South Kincumber's rural character.

Those roadside trees are the council's to lop or remove, so a branch over a fence or a root under a path is taken up with the council rather than cut. They are tall, heavy-limbed eucalypts and angophoras, and a job on a block behind them protects their root zones and plans every drop zone around their big limbs.

Kincumber South questions

A landmark red gum and the church grounds

Does a privately owned landmark gum still need approval?

Owning it does not settle the question. North of where McKillop Road meets Empire Bay Drive, the register listed a privately owned Sydney red gum as a large outstanding specimen and a landmark frequently the subject of artists. A tree of that standing goes to the council before any removal or heavy pruning, and an angophora that size sheds heavy limbs, so work near it is rigged with a clear drop zone.

Who handles trees in the old church and orphanage grounds?

The council's heritage officer. Schedule 5 of the Central Coast LEP 2022 lists two heritage items in the suburb: the convent and chapel of the Kincumber orphanage, and Holy Cross church and graveyard. Trees within listed grounds can form part of the item, and the council's ordinary tree rules stop short of a heritage item, so work there starts with the heritage process.
