How it works

From the first message to a written quote

The council question is settled before any price, and nothing is booked until you have said yes to a quote in writing.

  1. 1

Tell us what the tree is doing

Where it stands, what it is close to and what you would like done about it.

A grey haired man in his back yard on the phone, looking up at a tall gum beside the house
  2. 2

A contractor comes to see it

A tree contractor who covers your suburb looks at the tree, the access and what is underneath it.

A steep driveway up to a hillside house with a large Sydney red gum and sandstone boulders beside it
  3. 3

    The council question is answered

Height, trunk size, distance from the house and the species decide whether a permit or an exemption applies.

A woman at a dining table working on a laptop, tall gum trees through the window behind her
  4. 4

    You get it in writing

Scope, timber, stump and date on one page, and nothing is booked until you have said yes.

A tree contractor in hi-vis work clothes walking up to a front gate, where the home owner holds a single sheet of paper, a big gum across the road

Questions

Asked before anything is booked

Do I need the council's permission to cut back a tree?

Possibly, because on the Central Coast council permission may be required to prune or remove trees. Light pruning, branches over the roof, trees close to the house and species on the council's undesirable list are among the exemptions, and the permits page sets them out.

Who does the work?

An independent tree contractor. They look at the tree, quote the job and do it, and your agreement is with them. This site takes enquiries and passes them on; nobody here climbs trees.

Can the stump stay?

Yes. Cutting it low and leaving it costs less than grinding it out, and plenty of people choose that. The quote can price both so you can decide.

Is lopping the right word for what my tree needs?

People use it for anything from a light trim to taking half the tree away, so it covers a lot. What matters is what gets written on the quote: which limbs, cut back to where, and what happens to the timber.
