Tree work in Kangy Angy

A survey mark from 1831, and the rail site's mature trees

Felton Mathew's Tree was marked by assistant surveyor Felton Mathew in 1831. He was carrying out the original survey of the ranges east of the Great North Road. The tree's heritage listing describes a red mahogany (Eucalyptus resinifera), now a stump and regrowth, in natural bushland beside an abandoned stretch of the old road. Work on trees around it is planned so that nothing is felled onto, dropped on or driven over what is left.

In July 2018 council called on the State Government to pause works on the rail maintenance facility, whose amended plans had resulted in significant removal of trees on a site largely zoned E2 Environmental Conservation. Residents had pressed for a change, and that August the mayor welcomed a redesign, worked out with Transport for NSW, that would see 49 mature trees retained at Kangy Angy. Where a block here carries a conservation zoning, the approval path is confirmed with council before any branch is cut.

Kangy Angy questions

The survey stump, the fire trail complex and flood access

Who decides what happens to the survey tree?

Council, under its heritage rules. Felton Mathew's Tree in the Old Maitland Road road reserve is a local heritage item in council's planning scheme, and the scheme makes demolishing, moving or altering a heritage item subject to development consent, unless one of its exceptions applies. The stump and its regrowth are the listed tree, so even a small cut to them goes to council first.

Do bush blocks near the fire trails need work before summer?

They do. Council listed the Kangy Angy Fire Trail complex among the major upgrades in its fire trail program, reported in December 2025. A fire trail network is maintained because the bush it runs through can burn, so the work before summer is limbs off the roof, gutters cleared, low branches lifted and any dead tree close to the house felled.

What if heavy rain brings a flood?

Transport for NSW says the Mariyung train maintenance facility includes flood-free access for local residents via a bridge, linking Enterprise Drive to Orchard Road. Residents can also call site staff for an escort during a heavy rain flood evacuation. A storm job near Orchard Road is booked around the rain, with the truck and chipper coming in over that bridge.
