Tree work in Niagara Park

Weed camphors and a threatened paperbark

Council says the Niagara Park bushcare site has many large camphor laurels, with some rainforest species emerging through them. In 2021 it began a trial planting native figs into the forks of some of those camphors, so that the figs will in time strangle the weed trees. Near the bush, a big camphor in a yard can be taken down in stages rather than all at once, so the edge of the bush is not opened up in a day.

The remnant bushland directly behind Niagara Park Public School, restored by the Niagara Park Bushcare Group, holds the endangered Melaleuca biconvexa, along with swamp mahogany, Gosford wattle, bangalow palm and cabbage tree palm. On blocks that share a fence with it, trucks, log piles and green waste stay out of the remnant, and a paperbark near the boundary gets a firm identification before anyone plans its removal.

From the first message to a written quote

The council question is settled before any price, and nothing is booked until you have said yes to a quote in writing.

Tell us what the tree is doing

Where it stands, what it is close to and what you would like done about it.

  3. 3

    The council question is answered

Height, trunk size, distance from the house and the species decide whether a permit or an exemption applies.

Niagara Park questions

Council pines on the verges and a fire on record

Who looks after the big registered pines?

Council, since both are council trees. Gosford City Council's old register of significant trees listed a hoop pine on the council road reserve where Allen meets Louis Close. The same register listed a council-owned bunya pine in the road reserve beside a home on Alan Street, and pruning either tree, or any work in its root zone from a neighbouring block, starts with council.

Does the bush in Niagara Park burn?

It can, and it has. A wildfire named Mangrove Road appears in the parks service's fire history, burning entirely within Niagara Park. It started on 9 November 2002 and covered about 3.4 hectares, which is enough reason on a bush-edge block to keep limbs off the roof and to have dead or fire-damaged trees checked before they fall.

Can a big camphor laurel in the yard be removed?

There is an exemption that can cover it. The DCP exempts removal or pruning of any species on council's Undesirable Species List, provided the cutting meets the Australian Standard, and camphor laurel is on that list. The exemption does not hold where the tree is habitat for threatened fauna or part of a heritage item, so a big old camphor is checked for nests and hollows first.
