Where Ourimbah Creek reaches the lake

Central Coast Council describes Ourimbah Creek passing under the railway and eventually discharging into Tuggerah Lake at Chittaway Point. Ground at the mouth of a big creek like that is low and often wet, and trees growing in it keep their roots near the surface rather than sending them deep.

The council's flood mapping shows inundation of Chittaway Point at a major flood level of 1.6m at Tuggerah Lake. In a flood like that, lakeside trees can sit for days in waterlogged soil, which weakens their root plates and leaves them more likely to fall in the next strong wind.

Chittaway Point questions

Flooded roads, a summer wildfire and soft lawns

Does the lake flood the low parts of the suburb?

Parts of it can go under. In severe weather the council reported water over the road at Geoffrey Road and Vesta Close, while minor flooding was expected at Tuggerah Lakes. That was in early July 2022, and until the water drops and the ground firms up, a truck, a chipper or a stump grinder usually cannot get in.

Is fire a risk here as well as flooding?

It can be. NPWS fire history records a wildfire named Chittaway that started on 25 December 2005 and covered about 148.7 hectares. On a block that backs onto bush, a tree beside the house is judged as fuel as well as on its condition, with the bush fire prone land map checked for the lot first.
