Tree work in Daleys Point

Engravings on the point, and boulders under the soil

The point itself is national park. In Bouddi National Park, the Daleys Point walking track follows the ridgetop to Daleys Point Aboriginal site, sandstone engravings also known as Milligans Cave or Fish Hook Shelter. Trees on the park side are left to NPWS, and on the blocks beside it a stump grinder or any other machine near exposed rock is planned so that no Aboriginal object is disturbed.

The state's soil landscape map shows a colluvial unit of the Hawkesbury soil landscape here, about 28.8 hectares in area and mostly inside the suburb. That is steep sandstone country, with boulders and shallow, stony soil. A grinder often meets rock just under a stump, a tree rooted in thin soil can topple once it is saturated, and getting machinery onto a sloping block is worked out before the job is booked.

Daleys Point questions

Old wildfires and a recent planned burn

Has Daleys Point had a wildfire?

More than once. The parks service's fire history lists a wildfire named Daley's Point in the 1977-78 season, covering about 30.3 hectares. Fire returned as a wildfire named Daleys Point in October 2006, mapped as two small patches. Mature trees beside that bush are worth checking for fire scars, hollows and dead limbs, and leaf litter and low branches near the house usually come first.

Is the bush still burnt on purpose?

Yes. NPWS records a prescribed burn named Daleys Point HR of about 20.3 hectares in November 2022, following earlier burns there in 1999 and 2010. Trees on the park edge can be left with scorch marks and hollowed bases, so each one is inspected before it takes a climber's weight, and fuel left over from tree work near the boundary is carted off rather than stacked.

Does the 10/50 rule cover a tree on a steep block?

Not always. The code excludes slopes greater than 18 degrees, so on the steepest blocks the grade is measured before the rule is relied on. Where it does apply, the RFS online tool has to place the lot in an entitlement area on the day the work is done.
