Woy Woy Bay questions
Scarred trunks and a pine on the register
Why is a fire-scarred trunk checked before it is climbed?
Because fire can leave wood weaker than it looks. The bush here burnt in a wildfire in September 2012, and in May 2014 the records show a prescribed burn named Woy Woy Bay of about 15.6 hectares. Eucalypts on that edge can carry old scars and hollows at the base, so the trunk is checked first and the plan for taking the tree down allows for weak wood.
Is the old Norfolk Island pine in the suburb protected?
It is on a register. Gosford City Council's significant tree register listed a privately owned Norfolk Island pine in Woy Woy Bay as remnant vegetation threatened by road widening and drainage works, and recorded that its condition had improved since listing. Its roots are protected whenever trenching or kerbing goes in nearby, and if it ever has to come out, a pine that tall is lowered piece by piece from the top.
